For over 10 years, we have supported people in navigating the cancer experience and accessing the care and support they need, while building the evidence base to strengthen cancer navigation.

Since 2014 we have supported people in navigating the cancer experience and accessing the care and support they need, while building the evidence base to strengthen cancer navigation.

2014

We began the design, development, and pilot testing of a peer navigation program for men with prostate cancer and their caregivers, called the True North Peer Navigation Program

2017

The Peer Navigator Training Program received
the Innovation in Education Award from
the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

2017

We conducted a national, cross Canada survey of the peer support and peer navigation needs and preferences of adolescents and young adults with cancer

2019

We conducted a cross sectional survey of the peer support and peer navigation needs and preferences of people with head and neck cancer at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

2020

We launched a multi centre, multi province randomized controlled trial of the True North Peer Navigation Program for men following treatment for prostate cancer

2022

The program was redesigned and renamed PeerNav to support adolescents and young adults with cancer. We also initiated a pilot randomized controlled trial of PeerNav among young adults at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

2024

PeerNav was adapted for people with head and neck cancer and their caregivers. We also initiated a pilot study of PeerNav with this population at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

2024

We initiated a focus group study to explore how PeerNav could be adapted to meet the needs of patients and caregivers affected by metastatic cancer

2024

PeerNav was named a Leading Practice by the Canadian Health Standards Organization

2025

We initiated an implementation study to integrate PeerNav into routine care within the prostate cancer clinic at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

Who are we?

We are a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and patient partners committed to improving access to care and support for people affected by cancer.

Guided by the best available evidence and by patients’ needs and preferences, we developed PeerNav—a digital peer navigation service that connects patients and caregivers with trained cancer survivor peer navigators who provide meaningful, compassionate support.

Backed by years of rigorous research, PeerNav has been carefully designed to meet the diverse needs of people affected by cancer. Our team continues to conduct research on PeerNav to strengthen its effectiveness and to advance the science and practice of cancer navigation worldwide.

What do we do?

PeerNav is an evidence-based navigation service for people affected by cancer. We support patients and their families in navigating the cancer experience, making it easier to find, access, and use care and support services.

Through the PeerNav digital app, patients and caregivers are connected with a trained volunteer Peer Navigator who provides support by:

  • Assessing needs and helping to reduce barriers to care

  • Providing reliable information and emotional support

  • Encouraging a proactive approach to managing health and well-being

We also train cancer survivors to be Peer Navigators and provide ongoing support to help them thrive in their role.

Our Impact

PeerNav has improved access to care and support for patients with cancer.

A clinical trial of PeerNav at cancer centres in Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax showed that PeerNav helped patients with prostate cancer better manage their health, improved their quality of life, and reduced distress and supportive care needs.

It was also found to be cost-effective. Here's PeerNav by the numbers:
